The Tlhatlhaganyane community near Rustenburg claims that inadequate mining regulation has led to increased criminal activity and illegal mining. Residents report that their applications for mining permits are often overlooked in favour of outsiders. They also allege that some local mines profit from illegal operations by mixing illegally sourced minerals with legitimate ones for export.
