...and has anything changed?
In 2021 Paul Miller participated in a panel discussion with the Head of the Junior Mining Group of the MCSA, the DG of the DMRE and the CEO of the CGS, as part of the Junior Indaba - here he is asked to summarise what could be done, immediately, to improve South Africa's attractiveness as a destination for mineral exploration investment.
Needless to say there has been little change in the last 2-years; the DG has moved on, DMRE vacancies have been filled and the application backlog ostensibly halved - but the DMRE still embraces secrecy in all that it does. And the open, transparent, online mining cadastre remains a pipe dream.
It is no surprise then that South Africa's share of global mineral exploration continues to bump along at levels below 1%.
And GFCF in Mineral Evaluation and Exploration remains at the lowest level since the time series began in 1960.
